2023 Desist from selling your votes – Abdulsalami appeals to Nigerians. General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), a former head of state of the Nigerian military, has cautioned Nigerians against buying and selling votes in advance of the general elections in 2023.
In order to commemorate Nigeria’s 62nd anniversary of independence, the former military commander spoke to media at his Uphill mansion in Minna.
He bemoaned the fact that certain individuals in the nation are still buying and selling votes in spite of requests.
The elder statesmen bemoaned the detrimental impact vote buying and selling will have on the elections, emphasizing the necessity for all hands to be on deck to guarantee that this phenomena is ended.
There are some setbacks; certain electorates continue to sell their votes, and leaders continue to support vote buying and selling. I hope the electorates would keep in mind that it is their right to vote for candidates of their choosing and caliber. And for the love of God, no one should go sell their vote. Refrain from selling your franchise. I’m glad that some individuals are coming to this realization and warning others not to buy votes.
He urged national lawmakers not to launch a campaign of slander following the removal of the campaign ban.
“As we enter the 2023 election campaign, there shouldn’t be harsh terms in our campaigns,” said Abdulsalami. But engage in pro-tolerance campaigns as much as you can, as I know every politician is trying to sell their platform or the platform of their party.
Since 1999, politicians and Nigerians in general have worked to promote democracy, but there are obstacles along the way, of course. We committed mistakes, which our politicians are progressively correcting as they also gain more knowledge every day.
