EPL I don’t see the point in disrespecting best footballer ever – Souness slams Ten Hag. Erik ten Hag and Manchester United have come under fire from Liverpool veteran Graeme Souness for preventing Cristiano Ronaldo from leaving Old Trafford during the summer and for their subsequent disrespect of the football hero.
Even though the 37-year-old sought to leave the club through a second Old Trafford departure last summer, Manchester United and Ten Hag were unwilling to let him go.
Souness believes that the fact that the former Real Madrid and Juventus great has only started one Premier League game this year shows contempt for the 37-year-old player.
The 90 minutes of Sunday’s Manchester derby were spent with the Portugal international on the bench as Ten Hag opted for Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony before bringing Anthony Martial on.
Ten Hag had previously told reporters that he had refrained from using the moniker “out of respect” following the humiliating loss to Manchester City. But according to Souness, who was speaking to talkSPORT, Ronaldo “has a case for claiming, ‘I’ve been the best player ever’ – he can sit with any bunch of guys in the history of the game, if they were still living, and argue that.”
“So, given the disdain Manchester United is currently displaying for him, I don’t see the sense in enduring the frustration they have caused by forcing him to stay if they aren’t going to employ him.
Being disrespectful by not using him. I don’t accept that [Ten Hag’s reasoning], and I believe that by not employing him, you are actually being more disrespectful.
For the numerous Premier League champions last season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored over 22 goals, assisting them in their Europa League qualification.
