Police rescue 12 kidnap victims in Enugu, foil attempt on others. The attempt by kidnappers to kidnap several travelers along the Ugwuogo Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road has been reported by the police in Enugu State.
Residents had complained that suspected Fulani herders had blocked the route twice in the previous 48 hours.
Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement made available to DAILY POST that operatives rushed to the area and prevented the kidnapping attempt.
“Police Operatives of the Command serving in Unity Division, on September 21, 2022, at about 7.10 p.m., responded to a distress call, alleging that suspected kidnappers blocked the road between Ekwegbe-Agu and Neke-Uno communities, respectively, in Enugu East and Igbo-Etiti LGAs, along Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Highway, foiled the unidentified hoodlums’ attempt to kidn
He added that, prior to that incident, officers from the 9th Mile Police Division of the Command, with the help of the Neighborhood Watch Group, the Forest Guard, and law-abiding citizens, “on September 16, 2022, at about 5.30 p.m., rescued in a forest at Okpatu community in Udi L.G.A., four (4) victims alleged to have been kidnapped at Umulumgbe community in the same L.G.A., on
“This is in addition to their rescuing six (6) further victims in the same woodland on September 14, 2022, at around 4.15 p.m., who were allegedly abducted on September 12, 2022, in the Awhum hamlet in Udi L.G.A. Since then, all of the victims have reunited with their families.
He said that the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka road kidnappings had recently increased, and that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani, had ordered the urgent deployment of extra intelligence and operational resources to further control these instances.
In particular, he said, “this is to safeguard the security and safety of innocent residents along important roadways in the State.”
